Mia has spent her entire life immersed in water, fishing, swimming among seaweed and rocks, and following the rhythm of the sea. Time has passed, leaving traces on her body and transforming the landscapes she has always inhabited. The people she loved have disappeared, but memories continue to resurface through gestures, places, and her profound connection with the water. Through delicate and tactile animation, Sandra Desmazières creates the portrait of a woman and her relationship with the natural world, where the body becomes an archive of time and a keeper of both intimate and collective memory. Water Girls is a reflection on the passage between generations, the strength of the feminine, and the ancestral relationship between women and the sea.
Sandra Desmazières is an animator and filmmaker. She directed Flowing Home, shortlisted for the César and Oscar Awards in 2022. Water Girl premiered in the Short Film Competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
