Presentation of the book Il primo libro di geografia (Einaudi, 2025) with the author Mauro Varotto. Moderated by Marco Milan.
The book addresses the growing geographic ignorance and widespread “indifference to place” that characterize many sectors of contemporary society. Yet geography is everywhere: in the food we eat, the landscapes we inhabit, the involuntary geolocation of our movements, climate change, and the complex routes of migration. With this essay, Mauro Varotto emphasizes the importance of reclaiming the relational nature of our connection to space, an essential key to navigating the challenges of an increasingly interconnected and fragmented world.
Mauro Varotto (1970) is Full Professor of Geography and Cultural Geography at the University of Padua. He coordinated and directed Italy’s first University Museum of Geography. His publications with Einaudi include Montagne di mezzo. Una nuova geografia (2020) and Il primo libro di geografia (2025). Together with Tempo Pievani, he co-authored Viaggio nell'Italia dell'Antropocene. La geografia visionaria del nostro futuro (Aboca, 2021) and Il giro del mondo nell'Antropocene. Una mappa dell'umanità del futuro (Cortina, 2022).
The meeting will be held on Thursday, September 4, at Villa Beatrice d'Este, in Baone, at 6:00 p.m.
