In March 2025, the French government distributed a guide to citizens on how to prepare a survival kit in case of emergency. Shortly after, the European Union also issued recommendations on how to handle the first 72 hours after an attack or disaster. When the Wind Blows (1986) — the opening film of the 24th edition of the Euganea Film Festival — imagined a similar future: in a quiet house in the English countryside, an elderly couple receives a government leaflet on how to face a nuclear war. When the Wind Blows. A title more relevant than ever, resonating in a time marked by endless conflicts, war rhetoric, repression of dissent, and a narrative that — after decades of peace, at least in the West — seems to make war “necessary” once again. The shadow of the atomic age, which we believed was confined to the past, is stretching over our present. Eighty years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this retrospective presents three very different films that invite us to reflect on the concept of destruction and self-destruction: personal, collective, and environmental. Nel marzo 2025, il governo francese ha distribuito ai cittadini una guida su come preparare un kit di sopravvivenza in caso di emergenza. Poco dopo, anche l’Unione Europea ha diffuso raccomandazioni su come affrontare le prime 72 ore dopo un attacco o un disastro.
When the Wind Blows (1986) – film di apertura della 24ª edizione di Euganea Film Festival – immaginava un futuro simile: in una tranquilla casa della campagna inglese, una coppia di pensionati riceve un opuscolo governativo su come affrontare una guerra nucleare.
When the Wind Blows. Quando il vento soffia. Un titolo quanto mai attuale, che risuona in un tempo segnato da conflitti che non vedono la fine, retoriche belliche, repressione del dissenso e da una narrativa che – dopo decenni di pace, almeno in Occidente – sembra voler rendere di nuovo “necessaria” la guerra.
L’ombra dell’era atomica, che credevamo relegata al passato, si allunga sul nostro presente.
A ottant’anni da Hiroshima e Nagasaki, questa retrospettiva propone tre film molto diversi tra loro, che ci invitano a riflettere sul concetto di distruzione e autodistruzione: personale, collettiva, ambientale.
